The Iconic Lake O’Hara Lodge in British Columbia Uses Bio-Based Eco-Gel™ to Protect From Wildfires

Lake O'Hara Lodge

Lake O’Hara Lodge is nestled in the heart of Yoho National Park, British Columbia in Canada. It’s a gorgeous location with spectacular views, but it also has some unique challenges. The lodge is surrounded by dense forest and sits on top of ground that can easily catch fire from sparks and embers that fly into the trees during wildfires. The owners were worried about the safety of their guests and staff, so they turned to FireRein Eco-Gel™ for help!

Stewardship is part of their mission at Lake O’Hara Lodge, and they take environmental conservation seriously. They use energy-efficient lighting whenever possible, have an extensive in-house recycling program, avoid phosphorous-based laundry and dishwashing soaps which can be hard on the aquatic environments and use the latest membrane technology to treat their wastewater. They use FireRein Eco-Gel™ as a fire retardant and suppressant to protect their lodge in the event of a wildfire.

FireRein Eco-Gel™ is the only firefighting water additive that is certified 100% bio-based, made from ingredients found in food. Competitive products contain PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances) and other harmful chemicals that harm plant and aquatic life and are linked to cancer and congenital disabilities.

“Operating in the backcountry of a National Park, we need fire suppression equipment that is easy to use, highly effective, and environmentally safe,” says Jonathan von Ofenheim, manager of Lake O’Hara Lodge. We are glad to have Eco-Gel™ on hand and the proportioner to use it with our wildland fire pumps, in case a fire was to threaten our historic lodge and log cabins.”

FireRein Eco-Gel™ knocks down fires 55% faster than water and reduces water use by 60%. What makes it unique during wildfires is that it clings to vertical surfaces, protecting your home, business, and even surrounding trees and grasses. Unlike competitive products that are not effective in all water (only clean water with a narrow pH range), Eco-Gel™ can be used with your local water.

Although Lake O’Hara Lodge hopes never to need FireRein Eco-Gel™ to save their beautiful and historic buildings, they are happy to have a product on hand that will protect against fires while minimizing the impact done to the pristine environment.
